Camberwell Project

Period Extensions & Designs were engaged to undertake a second-storey addition and renovation on this single-fronted Victorian cottage situated in a quiet cul-de-sac in a highly sought-after pocket of Camberwell.

The existing home is an example of 1880s-style architecture with ornate period details. The brief was clear – retain the traditional character of the original part of the home with the beautiful period features and create a smooth transition to the new extension that included new living spaces, a master suite with a large walk-in-robe and ensuite, a new kitchen with butlers pantry and new laundry all contained on the ground floor and additional bedrooms and bathroom to the second-storey addition.

From the outset, the small original footprint of the house, the narrow site, and the heritage overlay posed many challenges for our Building Designer. COVID-19 lockdowns also prevented site visits in the initial stages of the design process. Period Extensions & Designs, however, was able to overcome these challenges to create a practical and aesthetically pleasing design that incorporates the accommodation requirements of the Homeowners without compromising on quality or space.

The design created by Period Extensions & Designs ensures that the home flows seamlessly from the existing period style to a light-filled contemporary addition. This was achieved by maximising access to natural light through a cathedral ceiling and the use of large windows and Velux skylights in the south-facing living area.

The finished product combines clever design with attention to detail and provides the Homeowners with an elegant, light-filled, and modern ‘forever’ home.
